For non-native learners, Chinese popular words can be overwhelming due to their abundance and the challenge of grasping their nuanced meanings. This study investigates the effectiveness of an online self-learning supporting system in empowering non-native Chinese language learners to enhance their language proficiency and cultural understanding of these Chinese popular words. This self-developed online system is conveniently accessible at the following link at https://appspenang.uitm.edu.my/talkmandenglish/, providing users with a seamless platform for language learning and cultural exploration of those Chinese popular words. After 14 weeks of self-learning using this online system, 101 non-native learners from UiTM Terengganu participated in a comprehensive questionnaire to evaluate their language acquisition and overall learning experience. The findings revealed positive outcomes in both language acquisition and the overall learning experience among participants who engaged in the 14 -week self-learning program using the online system. Tailored to facilitate self-learning, this online system proves particularly suitable for non-native learners aiming to grasp Chinese popular words effectively. © 2024 IEEE.
