The study was conducted to examine the role of servant leadership in predicting work performance. Specifically, this study hypothesized direct relationship between servant leadership and work performance as well as indirect relationship through mediating variables, namely self-efficacy, organizational commitment, and perceived organizational justice. Data collected from 194 public servants in Malaysia using online survey were analysed to test the hypothesis using hierarchical regression technique. The results revealed a significant direct relationship between servant leadership and work performance. Interestingly, however, the relationship became not significant when all the three mediator variables were tested together in the same model. Consistent with the social learning theory, equity theory and conservation of resources theory, the findings of the study contribute to the literature by proving the significant role of self-efficacy, organizational commitment, and perceptions of organizational justice as mechanisms explaining the indirect relationship between servant leadership and work performance in an organization. Practically, the study suggests that servant leadership are important to encourage self-efficacy, justice, and organizational commitment to warrant employee’s work performance. © 2023 Penerbit Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia.
