Malaysia is a Southeast Asian country that is known for its paddy cultivation. Paddy is the primary crop grown in the country to meet the food requirements of its population. Malaysia is fortunate to have thirteen states that oversee paddy granaries and rice production, except for Wilayah Persekutuan since Wilayah Persekutuan does not conduct any paddy cultivation. Each state has its own unique climatic and geographical conditions that affect its paddy production. Identifying the most efficient state for paddy granary production is crucial in meeting the growing demand for paddy and rice in the country; therefore, a study was conducted to identify the most efficient state in Malaysia for paddy granary production. This study aims to provide a reference for other states to improve their efficiency in paddy granary production. A combination of both traditional and modern Data Envelopment Analysis models, which is the Bi-O MCDEA BCC and Super Efficiency model, was employed to accomplish the objective of this study. This study utilized a dataset with three input variables, such as planted area, parcel area and harvest area, as well as three output variables, such as paddy production, rice production and average yield. The results indicated that Kedah, also known as The Land of Paddy Fields or ‘Negeri Jelapang Padi’, was the most efficient state, with an efficiency score of 2.446064, followed by Pulau Pinang with an efficiency score of 1.182405. This study concluded that Kedah is the best state for paddy granary production in Malaysia. The findings of this study are significant as they could help other states in Malaysia to optimize their production and improve their efficiency in paddy granary production, thereby contributing to the nation’s food security. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
