Summary:Sustainable port growth is still a primary concern in Asia and the Pacific, where more than half of the busiest ports are located, and two-thirds of the world’s seaborne trade is currently concentrated. Most ports must continue to improve their performance and productivity in order to keep up with the steadily increasing volume of seaborne trade, as well as the quality of their hinterland linkages. This study examined the operational efficiencies of a significant port in Malaysia in achieving environmentally sustainable port status. The complexity of energy and environmental systems, together with the severe consequences of human actions on nature globally, is necessitated using holistic decision-making strategies. This strategy is used by developing a model that integrates various criteria and functions to meet the interests of all players in the maritime supply chain. These criteria include optimizing available resources, minimizing environmental impacts, reducing overall costs, enhancing operational safety, and meeting energy needs. A hybrid methodology that combines the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to provide a solid basis for efficiency analysis, which simultaneously considers the subjective evaluation process of input and output factors, was employed. The results indicate that Vessel Service Time (VST) can be the most important factor in measuring the environmentally sustainable port and has been embedded into DEA for efficiency measures. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
