A road network needs to be maintained continuously to be able to continue providing an acceptable level of service to road users. Maintenance reduces road deterioration, lowers road user costs, and keeps the road open on a continuous basis. This paper presents the various pavement maintenance techniques used in Malaysia to preserve the condition of road pavements so that the road can be continuously operated without disruption due to major road rehabilitation activities. First, the evaluation and selection of the appropriate maintenance treatment for flexible pave-ment are discussed. Then, maintenance treatment methods are presented include crack sealing, chip seal, micro-surfacing, thin hot mix asphalt overlay, and hot in-place recycling. Finally, the treatment methods are evaluated to determine their cost effectiveness. The approach presented in this paper will assist those involved in road maintenance on the application of appropriate pavement maintenance treatment for flexible pavement. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2023.
