A systematic literature review (SLR) has been carried out by utilizing Kitchenham and Charters SLR guidelines. Three primary steps have been taken which are (i) planning review, (ii) conducting review, and (iii) reporting results. There are five major aspects have been analyzed which are the category of (i) AR and motivation, (ii) types of the heritage tourism sector, (iii) marker design, (iv) AR content, and (vi) the application context. The results from the SLR reveal that AR technology has the potential to greatly enhance the visitor experience, particularly in the Islamic tourism sector. Thus, the next stage of this study is to explore the development of AR applications for promoting Islamic heritage tourism through the concept of informal learning. © 2024 IEEE.
