Summary:The Malaysian Cooperatives Transformation Plan or TransKom (2021–2025) intends to transform co-operative sector as the third economic engine of the nation. To realise the aspiration, responsible agencies organise retraining, upskilling, and reskilling for co-operatives’ board members, management teams, employees, and members. With Islam as the official religion of the federation, mosque co-operatives contribute importantly to economic and financial stability of mosque institutions. With the steady stream of revenue, mosques host religious and educational programmes, and support community socioeconomic aspect. Hence, the board members of mosque co-operatives must possess skills to execute the responsibilities towards achievement of underlying objectives. The study aims to ascertain the set of skills essential to mosque co-operatives’ board members, then to examine the relationship of the skills with mosque co-operatives’ performance. Using cross sectional research design, the study deploys survey to gauge the perspective of mosque co-operatives’ board members towards the underlying issues. The results reveal that there are two sets of skills essential for board members, and both significantly influence the performance of mosque co-operatives. The outcomes of the study shall benefit strategic stakeholders in Islamic religious administrative, especially in building build back better society, revitalise economic and social sector during the post pandemic covid-19 era. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.
