Shoulder press is a common exercise performed to increase shoulder muscles strength. This study aims to determine and compare the electromyographic (EMG) activation and performance during three sets of shoulder press exercise among untrained women. Thirty recreationally active, untrained women were recruited as study participants and were required to lift 80% of one repetition maximum (1RM). EMG activation was obtained from the anterior deltoid and triceps brachii during the shoulder press exercises. Performance was measured by the number of repetitions performed in the three sets during the exercises. Results showed that the number of repetitions and EMG activation decreased significantly in the second set. As the conclusion, among untrained women, it seems that performance in shoulder press exercise tend to decrease as early as during the second set. It is recommended for untrained women to perform more than a single set for each exercise in a resistance training to promote stimuli for muscular endurance adaptation. © 2024 Author(s).
