Rotating machines play a pivotal role in various industries, serving as the heart of power generation, manufacturing, and transportation systems. Ensuring their reliable operation is of paramount importance, as unexpected failures can lead to significant downtime and economic losses. Partial discharge (PD) phenomena are early indicators of insulation deterioration in rotating machines, making their localization and continuous monitoring crucial for predictive maintenance and reliability enhancement. This paper presents a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art techniques and methodologies for PD localization and monitoring in rotating machines. The paper aims to guide researchers, engineers, and maintenance professionals in selecting the most suitable PD localization and monitoring methods for their specific rotating machine applications. Hence, this review paper serves as a valuable resource for the rotating machine community, shedding light on the evolving landscape of PD localization and monitoring techniques. By staying abreast of the latest developments in this field, practitioners can proactively manage the health of their rotating machines, minimize unplanned downtime, and optimize maintenance strategies. © 2023 IEEE.
