Description
Summary:Natural nanofillers have been attracting a great deal of attention because of their potential standalone applications in the fields of material science and polymer composites. Promoting better dispersion of nanomaterials is the key challenge in the sophisticated process of manufacturing high-performance composites. The desired properties of the resulting composites are enhanced mechanical strength, toughness and stiffness, thermal and electrical conductivity, superior flame retardancy, and better water vapor and gas barrier properties. Furthermore, with unique design possibilities and atypical combined properties, their potential is so striking that they are useful in creating functional materials with desired properties for specific applications. Researches reveal that the homogeneous nanofiller dispersions remarkably reinforce the large interfacial area between the constituents of the nanocomposites. This chapter concentrates on the interactions of polymer matrix interfaces with supplementing either organic, inorganic, or carbon-based nanofillers. Recent studies that evaluate the electrostatic interactions among the constituent materials and their role in creating a distinct functionalized composite, which attributable to its characteristics will be detailed. Also, some properties achieved in recently developed natural nanofiller-added composites are highlighted, and their potential applications are envisioned. © 2024 selection and editorial matter, N. M.
