The aging population is increasing dramatically. While it is remarkable that life expectancy is on the rise, this will pose major challenges for health care systems—increased burden of disease, medicine use, and cost. The needs of an aging population with regard to medicine use can be multifaceted and complex. As such, it is unrealistic to address the issues pertaining to medicine use in older adults solely from a biomedical perspective. Since medicine use is a social phenomenon, a sociological approach in understanding issues related to medicine use in older adults should be incorporated within the domains of pharmacy practice and clinical pharmacy. © 2019 Elsevier Inc.
