The role of emerging sample preparation methods in postmortem toxicology: Green and sustainable approaches

The analysis of drugs and toxicants in postmortem samples is a challenging task due to the complexity of the sample matrix and the low concentrations of the analytes. Over the last three decades, green sample preparation techniques such as sorbent-based and solvent-based microextraction methods have...

The analysis of drugs and toxicants in postmortem samples is a challenging task due to the complexity of the sample matrix and the low concentrations of the analytes. Over the last three decades, green sample preparation techniques such as sorbent-based and solvent-based microextraction methods have gained popularity as efficient and eco-friendly alternatives to traditional sample preparation methods. In this review article, we discuss various green sample preparation approaches that have been used for the analysis of drugs and toxicants in postmortem samples. The review article also highlights the potential future direction of green sample preparation techniques in postmortem toxicology. Finally, as an example, whiteness for selected analytical methods for determining antidepressants in postmortem samples has been evaluated by recently introduced RGB 12 algorithm. The information presented in this review is intended to serve as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners in the field of postmortem toxicology. © 2023 Elsevier B.V.
