Summary: | Finite element (FE) analysis programs are widely used to study and analyze the dynamics of structures. However, dynamic analysis and characterization of multidegree of freedom structures exhibiting nonlinear dynamic behaviour is challenging and complicated. This is due to the inability to develop a unique mathematical methodology to describe the multitude of phenomena that occur in nonlinear dynamics. Nevertheless, methodologies such as the Response Control Stepped-Sine Testing (RCT) and the Harmonic Force Surface (HFS) have been developed and successfully applied to extract nonlinear frequency response functions (FRFs). Even though the HFS has been integrated in finite element analysis packages this does not happen for the RCT or the combination of the two. This article describes how RCT can be integrated into the MSC NASTRAN finite element analysis package. More specifically, a five degree of freedom (DOF) system is analyzed in MSC NASTRAN using the RCT method. The results are compared with those obtained using the HFS method and the RCT method that was developed outside MSC NASTRAN. The nonlinear FRFs obtained using both the MSC NASTRAN solver and the methodology developed outside MSC NASTRAN agree very closely, thus showing that RCT can be integrated into MSC NASTRAN. © 2023 Proceedings of the International Congress on Sound and Vibration.
