Summary: | The elastomeric materials based on NR/BR/SSBR ternary rubber blend were prepared using a two-stage mixing technique using 1.6 L laboratory-use intensive mixer and 160 L Banbury mixer. The natural rubber (NR), butadiene rubber (BR), and solution polymerized styrene butadiene rubber (SSBR) were used as network precursors. At the same time, carbon black (CB) and silica were used as the hybrid fillers to reinforce the rubber composites. The effect of two different processing techniques, i.e. intensive mixer and Banbury, on cure characteristics and mechanical properties of rubber composites at different CB/silica compositions was assessed. The distinctive result between intensive mixer and Banbury is observed in the optimum cure time, delta torque, and strength of vulcanizates as the result of better mixing properties achieved by intensive mixer. For instance, delta torque has significantly increased about 5–21% for the compounds produced by intensive mixer, thus increased the tensile strength about 1–8%, observed at filler compositions of 12/56, 20/48, and 32/36. However, the wear resistance for the compounds with Banbury shows the higher value which is in agreement with the modulus and viscosity of the compounds. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
