Pulping and paper mechanical properties of Bambusa vulgaris, Gigantochloa levis, and Gigantochloa scortechinii bamboo
Bambusa vulgaris, Gigantochloa levis, and Gigantochloa scortechinii bamboo species or locally known as Aur, Beting, and Semantan bamboos were pulped using soda–anthraquinone (AQ) pulping at the age of 1-, 3-, and 5-year old. Pulping yield ranged from 35.7% to 51.7% at different bamboo species and ag...

Pulping yield ranged from 35.7% to 51.7% at different bamboo species and ages, with the pulping conditions at 20% of NaOH, 170°C pulping temperature, 90minutes time to reach pulping temperature and 90minutes time at pulping temperature, 1:6 of bamboo to liquor ratio, and 0.1% of AQ based on bamboo oven-dried weight. Due to the economical aspect of the highest pulping yield, the bamboo at the age of 1 was chosen to undergo the beating process for all the bamboo species. The bamboo pulp was beaten at 1000, 2000, 4000, and 8000 beating revolutions to determine the paper’s mechanical properties at different bamboo species. The paper’s mechanical properties showed higher strength with the increase of the beating revolution. © 2023 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Elsevier English Book chapter |
