Summary: | This paper presents the characterization of carbon-based antenna for NFC tag application. Carbon-based material is well known for its low cost, bio-compatible and non-oxidized characteristics. However, there are several drawbacks with carbon-based materials in antenna application including its high resistance loss property. Therefore, a parametric study on the antenna geometry has been carried out to achieve the optimum design of a carbon-based NFC tag antenna. Analysis of the antenna electrical parameters including inductance, resistance and quality factor has also been highlighted in this paper. From the simulation analysis, it is observed that varying the width of the coil, the gap between the coils, the number of turns and the width of the chamfer can contribute to the reduction of the antenna resistance. The final design of the carbon-based NFC tag antenna has achieved the resistance value of 55.10 Ω, which is approximately 94 % reduced from the initial design with a similar conductivity. The antenna reflection coefficient, S11 and antenna tuning circuit also have been observed and developed through simulation. © 2022 IEEE.
