Software Sustainability Practices and Awareness Amongst Software Practitioners in Malaysia: An Exploratory Study

Software sustainability provides decision-making on selecting software criteria in developing software. The need to understand software sustainability requirements, benefits, and impacts on software development is a major objective to achieve sustainability. Developers' awareness about the activities, knowledge, skill, and practices are beneficial to motivate the stakeholders to develop sustainability-friendly software. This article discusses the findings from the exploratory study of software sustainability practices and awareness conducted among software practitioners in Malaysia. The objective consists of investigating the software practitioners' awareness of sustainable software and the current practices of software sustainability in the software industries. A total of 135 software practitioners in Malaysia including the government and private sectors are investigated. The respondents were centered at Kedah, Pulau Pinang, Selangor, and Kuala Lumpur and performed 53 practices and the level of awareness applied and tested amongst the software organizations in Malaysia. © 2022 IEEE.
