Summary: | Sustainability has become a universal issue that has been increased over the years. Sustainable practices in the construction industry involved in meeting the client's needs without compromising the factors of environmental, economic and social. This paper aims to investigate the importance of sustainable practices in the Malaysian construction industry. The objectives were to identify the sustainable components and to determine the level of importance of sustainable construction in the Malaysian construction industry. An extensive literature review wasdone to obtain the information on the sustainable components and a questionnaire survey was doneto determine the importance of sustainable construction. The questionnaires were distributedthrough e-mails to various construction practitioners in the area of Kuala Lumpur. A total of 74 respondents' feedbacks managed to be gathered and data collected were analyzed using SPSS employing descriptive analysis to determine mean and rank of components and the perception of importance of sustainable construction. The study provides analysis on the perspective of importance from three main components; economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable construction. The results showed that three most important characteristics perceived were occupational health and safety, risk management and quality management. Therefore, it is essential to provide a comprehensive awareness and technical knowledge on the sustainableconstruction that would give the construction players a competitive advantage in the long-run and may even increase their profitability. © 2022 Institute of Physics Publishing.
