Oil palm is an important agricultural crop in Malaysia, and it is one of the world’s leading producers of oil palm products. Oil palm tree residues are abundant in biomass resources, and it is possible for more advantageous applications such as biofuel, palm composite, pulp, and paper. Oil palm biomass (OPB) is a lignocellulosic waste regularly left in the field during replanting, pruning, and milling of palm oil, which generates a huge number of trunks, fronds, empty fruit bunches, fiber, and shells. These fibers provide an alternative to wood fiber and synthetic fibers to produce acceptable and valuable hybrid composite materials for many applications including furniture, building, transportation, structural, and nonstructural materials. Each oil palm fiber, in terms of part and function, has its own distinctive and unique properties: thee anatomical structure, fiber arrangement, physical properties, chemical composition, and mechanical properties from each fiber. This review covers reported studies on the properties of oil palm fibers and literature on oil palm biomass, particularly oil palm trunk (OPT), oil palm frond (OPF), and empty fruit bunch (EFB) fibers. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
