Scholars have long debated the characteristics of questionnaires. What is less clear is the characteristics of vision-related questionnaires developed for the paediatric population. We used PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses) approach to compile 386 items for the review. Questionnaires developed for the paediatric population can be as short as eight items up to as long as 47 items. The question approach was found to be twofold higher than the statement approach. The application of positive and negative phrasing is relatively balanced. Both patient-reported outcomes measures and patient-reported experience measures styles are employed. Nearly two-thirds of the questionnaires are intended for self-reporting. Proxy-reporting is predominantly for younger age groups. A recommendation for future design characteristics in paediatric eye care questionnaires has been provided. © 2022 UPM Press. All rights reserved.
