Summary:This study presents a bibliometric analysis of research on mathematics education from 1980 through 2020. The purpose of the study is to provide scientific data on the distribution pattern of mathematics education journals, the most prolific authors, countries, institutions, current research topics, potential international collaboration, and direction of research. A total of 12 670 articles were retrieved from the Scopus database and the number of publications is predicted to increase further based on the performance indicator of the cumulative articles. The main topic of interest in the discipline usually centered on problem solving, professional development of teachers, and curriculum, while for mathematics subjects several topics that received the greatest attention included algebra, proof, calculus, technology, geometry, and modeling. © 2021. by the authors; licensee Modestum.
