Summary:Over the years, the Malaysian government is committed to improve public transportation system by expanding its railway transportation system especially throughout the areas within Kuala Lumpur and Klang Valley. This is to reduce traffic congestion and at the same time provide passengers with a more comfortable and time-saving means of transportation. Although this system is relatively more eco-friendly for the public mass movement and saves energy consumption, however, the ground vibration induced by the trains greatly contributes towards human annoyance. The ground-borne vibration produced by the train operation has significant effects especially towards the people who live in the affected residential areas. This research compared the ground-borne vibration induced by the railway traffic between peak hours and non-peak hours in four case studies using seismograph to obtain the ground vibration data and laser meter detector to obtain the speed of train. The relationship between the speed of train and the distance from source showed an inverse relationship, as the distance from source increased, the ground vibration will decrease. As an attempt to estimate the ground-borne vibration induced by the railway, a multiple linear regression model had been developed. The result of this research reveals that the magnitude of vibration during non-peak hour was higher than the magnitude of vibration during peak hour of train operation. This could serve as a starting basis in predicting the ground-borne vibration from the railway and thus contributes towards a sustainable development in the dense, populated metropolitan like Klang Valley, Malaysia. © 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
