Summary: | This paper aims to identify the core competency required by safety manager in managing construction safety on construction projects and their level of effectiveness. Total of 30 questionnaires received form 100 questionnaires distributed to qualified safety managers work within Klang Valley registered with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Malaysia with various post of safety officer, manager and consultant. It was found that safety managers consume of several important skills and knowledge on general management functions, practices, and procedures regarding safety and occupational health concepts, principles, practices, methods, and techniques based on the working experience on the construction field. The skills and knowledge on general management functions, practices and procedures can be accomplished by presenting personal concerns for the health and safety of employees, conducting the job-training program, participating in the management of safety committees, considering safety in job design, and reviewing the level of work. It has been recommended that safety managers must invest time and energy themselves for own development of skill, knowledge, and other competencies for more efficient professional safety manager. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
