The main characteristics of mobile learning (m-learning) are recognized as the potential for learning process to be personalized, spontaneous, informal and ubiquitous. It can be used to support the extensive learning of new words in Chinese fantasy novel. The vocabulary expansion using new words of Chinese fantasy novel allows students to attain their vocabulary expansion in a mobile environment. By using their smartphones to access the learning materials, students are able to carry out their learning whenever and wherever they intend to. An empirical study using both the quantitative and qualitative approaches was carried out in Universiti Teknologi MARA, Terengganu Campus using a sample of 82 students. The outcome of the study validated that using smartphone is able to deliver an enriching extensive learning experience. The qualitative results provide responses from the students on aspects that can be improved to make the most of the effectiveness of using mobile technologies for feasible extensive learning practice. © 2017 American Scientific Publishers.
